You, not anyone else, are the future of philanthropy

02.10.2026

In her deeply moving and inspiring presentation, Katherine Fulton, President of the Monitor Institute, a strategist, and an educator devoted to social change, invited us to look again and redefined a concept that seems so familiar: philanthropy.

Katherine Fulton, President of the Monitor Institute.

We often think of philanthropy as something reserved for the wealthy, those with millions in their accounts, or organizations bearing the names of billionaires. Yet Katherine asserts that philanthropy is being democratized. In this age of connectivity, each of us, through our time, our talents, or even a few dollars or modest contributions, can become part of a powerful movement creating positive change in the world.

Katherine also highlights a significant shift: from organization-based philanthropy to issue-based philanthropy. Instead of focusing on “who gives,” the more urgent question today is, “What problems call for our engagement?” This marks not only a change in action but a transformation in mindset, one in which every individual has the potential to become a community leader in their own way.

At the close of her talk, Katherine offers a powerful image: a blank photograph, with no one in it. Imagine that it is you.

A hundred years from now, what will your descendants say when they look at that photograph?
What story would you want to leave behind, not through the wealth you possess, but through how you lived, how you gave, and how you helped build a community worth cherishing.

Philanthropy is no longer just the work of “someone else.” It is an invitation, addressed to you. Its future lies in your hands, beginning today.

Charity & Philanthropy: Distinct Yet Complementary
Since the late nineteenth century, Andrew Carnegie, considered the founding father of modern giving, strongly criticized both posthumous bequests and indiscriminate acts of charity. He believed that wealth should be utilized during one’s lifetime to create communal value, famously asserting that “to die rich is to die disgraced.” Source: Serudsindia From there, a new dividing […]

In the 12th century, Moses Maimonides (1135–1204), philosopher, physician, and Jewish rabbi, codified one of the most distinguished humanistic doctrines on charity: Eight Levels of Charity. This is a hierarchical table of charitable acts, from lowest to highest, determined by the degree of respect and support given to the recipient’s dignity. This doctrine carries not […]
